The South-South Corporation and Women's Development Forum opened in Beijing recently to promote discussion on issues related to gender equality.
The forum was jointly organized by the Charhar Institute, a non-governmental think tank; UN Women; and, the Yenching Academy of Peking University.
Experts and scholars from China and abroad voiced their opinions about gender and women’s development issues in developing countries at the event.
Zhang Guobin, Secretary General of the Charhar Institute, said: "Gender equality is an important part of the UN’s sustainable development goals. Meanwhile, South-South Cooperation can help to promote gender equality in developing countries."
Li Huiying, a professor of sociology at explained the connotations of gender equality.
"Gender equality refers to equal rights and opportunities between men and women. It advocates that both genders can have diversified choices," said Li.
Julia Broussard, UN Women Country Programme Manager in China, praised the achievements Chinese women have made in the fields of education and poverty alleviation.
Meanwhile, Broussard hoped other developing countries could learn about China's experience regarding gender equality.
Benedict Bingham, Chief Representative of the Asian Development Bank in China, said his company attaches great importance to gender issues and is dedicated to promoting gender equality.
Dai Yuanying, Consul General of the Philippine Embassy in China, said the Philippines has sound gender equality laws, and officials in the Philippine government require a certain proportion of civil servants to be female.
